What is Wordpress? How easy is it to use?
chalkfish works with the open-source (free) blogging software Wordpress and uses it as a small-scale content management system. ( http://wordpress.org )
CMS or content management system is a complicated way of describing a computer programme that like Windows Word can allow the user to update their own web pages or blog (including adding pictures and videos!) from any computer attached to the internet (Mac or Pc) via all normal internet browsers. A hour long lesson in how to update is all most people need as the interface is so user-friendly and like the Word we all know and love/hate!
What Wordpress and open-source software has done is bring this functionality to all and hence enabled designers like myself to offer high end useability at low-end cost. Other open-source solutions exist in the areas of shopping carts, larger forums etc etc. All can be implemented by a designer now.
Below is a simple screen shot of the basic interface for updating Wordpress and it familiar to anybody who regularly uses Facebook or Blogger online and just as simple to learn!
With a customised Wordpress Template (there now hundreds available as designers like myself add to the stock of solutions - my own coming soon!) I can offer a fast and reliable website that does so much more than sit there…now everybody can have a fresh and active web interface……I’ll stop there I sounding like a convert..but I am…all my recent websites employ Wordpress (including this one) in some form or another and I still learning.
Basically like a mechanic I make sure everything under the bonnet works OK. I can respray the car to any colour you like and change the look and feel to be unique to you through re-writing the code.
Because Wordpress needs a little techinical knowledge to set up on own domain name/server and because although simple glitches can sometimes happen I offer a year’s hosting and maintenance to keep everything running smoothly and am at end of phone if something goes wrong. Higher end customisable content management systems that allow multiple author updating and a host of plugins from calenders to database driven functions to shopping carts.
The more functionality required the higher the price as setting up and keeping working require more time than the simple Wordpress software.
